We hope that you will come to understand and get to know CAMP DAWN - what the retreat weekend is all about, who is involved, who supports this annual event and how you can get involved.

Acquired brain injury is one of the most devastating events someone can experience. Following an acquired brain injury, survivors face a variety of challenges including difficulties with activities of daily living, loss of valued roles, reduced financial resources and isolation from family and friends. Due to these and many more challenges, survivors are often unable to take part in their previously enjoyed recreational activities.

With every dawn a new path is found

Originally envisioned as a tent camping weekend by the Brain Injury Association of Chatham-Kent (BIACK) as a recreation activity for their clubhouse members in 2002, CAMP DAWN has developed into much, much more than just camping! For adults in southwestern Ontario living with the effects of an acquired brain injury, we hope that CAMP DAWN provides an opportunity to get away and meet others who are facing the same challenges, get out and try new activities, all in a supportive, outdoor environment.

The success of Camp Dawn can be measured in the number of returning campers and leaders at each year’s camp. The Board of Directors is committed to improving this unique experience for all campers by incorporating the feedback received from campers and leaders. As Camp Dawn continues to grow each year, it offers an opportunity for new friendships to be made and old friends to share time together again.

WHAT IS CAMP DAWN?

  • Cabin camping experience for adults with acquired brain injuries
  • Ratio of 2 “campers” : 1 “leader”
  • Activities may include: crafts, games, campfires, music, orienteering / hiking, meal prep / clean-up, fishing, sports
  • **Free time, informal discussion and shared experiences amongst participants (both campers and leaders) appear to be the key elements to CAMP DAWN’s popularity and success**
